The ultimate in unwinding after the work week: A shiny new LCD TV, a DVD of old UFCs (currently watching UFC 2), and a glass of good beer (Bah Humbug!—a Christmas seasonal, obviously). After I finish my rather late supper, I shall sip on a glass of the Glenlivet. A night to myself cannot easily get better…

So, I got a 32" LCD TV to replace my 32" CRT TV. Not that there’s anything wrong with the latter, but it’s huge, clunky, hard to move, and eats up an awful lot of real estate. My living room feels a lot bigger already. (And the new TV looks tiny: Granted, it’s 16:9 and therefore not as tall as the CRT, but mostly it’s because that huge slab of matter is out of the way.) The new TV is also rather remarkably sharper. And—it has VGA input, so I’m hoping that connecting a computer will be easier from now on.

Not quite happy with my DVD player, though—bought it just the other day because my old one broke. Criterion: Cheapest DVD player on the shelf that was not identical to the one that just failed. May not have been the best idea. The tray stuck once or twice, it loads everything with excruciating slowness, and just doesn’t look like it’ll last… I think perhaps I’ll return it and get another. Question is, now that I have an LCD TV (“only” 780p, not 1080p; but still much sharper than the CRT), should I spend the extra money and get a Blu-ray capable player?
